specialist support for dairy farmers

MEDIA RELEASE
A new specialist insurance brokerage is helping dairy farmers build financial resilience, as the industry faces one of its most challenging seasons in years.

“With widespread drought and increased bushfire risk, dairy farmers are facing immense financial stress and uncertainty, and insurance can often feel like another pressure and drain on resources,” Gabrielle Toscan, Managing Director of Dairy Protect, said.

“We want to give dairy farmers more control over their insurance, and make sure that their cover is working for them – not just ticking a box.”

Launched in June 2025 by Breakwater Insurance Brokers, Dairy Protect provides farms with strategic insurance advice, helping them to identify the most suitable cover from a hand-picked panel of insurers. This includes across farm pack, farm motor, machinery breakdown, business interruption, and other key risk areas.

Breakwater Insurance Brokers has decades of experience supporting hundreds of dairy farms across western Victoria and regional South Australia.

“Insurance needs to be more than just a cost of doing business – it should be a tool for resilience, risk management, and long-term security,” Ms Toscan said.

“It can be tempting during tough times to view insurance as an expense to trim – but this approach can leave farms dangerously exposed when they can least afford a setback.”

As part of its launch, Dairy Protect is offering no-obligation insurance reviews and drought-specific advice to any dairy farmer. It comes as the Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook (Winter 2025) has highlighted increased fire risk across Victoria and South Australia.

“We know that insurance isn’t just about preparing for disaster. It’s about strengthening your business, planning for the unexpected, and making sure you’re not left exposed when things go wrong,” Ms Toscan said.

“With decades of rural and dairy experience, our team has extensive knowledge of the unique risks and needs of modern dairy operations. Especially in a drought, we want our farmers to know they have options, and that they have brokers who will stand with them.”

Dairy Protect also provides advocacy and claims support when it matters most.

“Dairy Protect offers a fresh, farmer-focused approach to insurance broking,” Ms Toscan said.
